Champion and legend

Renowned resort

Saint-Lary, a resort through time

To better understand the mythical dimension of this resort, we need to go back in time. In the middle of the last century, when Vincent Mir, the mayor of the village of Saint-Lary, originally from a neighbouring Spanish valley, decided to turn to tourism and winter sports to develop the valley’s activity and try to maintain its population.

In 1957, the cable car was built and brought the first skiers to the slopes of Pla d’Adet. Six years later, the resort expanded to include the Espiaube ski area, while his daughter Isabelle Mir went on to win medals and become world downhill champion! In 1976, it was the turn of the Bielsa tunnel to be built, a gateway to Spain that opened the door to the riches and activities of upper Aragon. A unique feature of the Pyrenees that gives Saint-Lary its warm, Iberian feel.

Later, the De Le Rue siblings were to reach the heights of snowboarding in several disciplines. Xavier and Polo in snowboard-cross, the first to win several world titles and the second to win bronze at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin. Today, the younger Victor is following in the footsteps of his two older brothers. But it’s in freeride that he’s restoring the Rue name to its former glory.
