Its thermal springs made it the Pyrenean capital of high society in the 19th century, and its magnificent natural surroundings the Mecca of Pyrenean tourism! From its dazzling history, Cauterets has preserved some of the most refined and original architecture in the Pyrenees, as well as an incomparable atmosphere. People choose Cauterets as much for the elegance and ambience of its village as for the quality of its snow cover.

“Little Canada

A jewel case of wild nature

The other jewel in Cauterets’ crown is seven kilometres away, at the Pont d’Espagne. A majestic site, in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park, surrounded by prestigious peaks, including the highest summit in the French Pyrenees, the Vignemale. This area, which has been nicknamed “Little Canada”, opens onto the Marcadau and Gaube valleys. With its pine forests, it complements the Cirque du Lys ski area.

Here you can enjoy cross-country skiing and tobogganing, as well as downhill skiing via the Gaube chairlift. Gaube is an evocative name, recalling the famous vertical corridor of ice and snow leading to the summit of the Vignemale.

The mountain under the stars

With over 36 kilometres of pistes, the Pont d’Espagne is a renowned spot in the Pyrenees for Nordic skiing, gliding between fir trees and frozen lakes. Snowshoe enthusiasts can also venture out on its snowy trails to the Wallon Marcadau refuge, located at the confluence of 4 valleys, the ideal base camp for hiking.

Mountain guides offer night-time excursions, including Joël Casteran, who believes that “the strong point of Cauterets is that it has sumptuous valleys that are very accessible”. Taking to the snowy paths on snowshoes at night allows you to appreciate the wild beauty of the area. You can walk under a starry sky, admire the icefalls and enjoy a garbure in the warmth of the Chalet du Clot. The bravest can even choose to spend the evening or night under an igloo.
