George Sand, Alfred de Vigny, Alexis de Tocqueville, Chateaubriand, Flaubert, Victor Hugo – the literary gotha have all stayed in Cauterets, to take advantage of the hot springs that flow freely here, but also to venture into the heart of the mountains, in fabulous natural surroundings.
From this splendid era, Cauterets has preserved some of the most refined and original architecture in the Pyrenees, as seen in the spa centre. The high ceilings adorned with pampille chandeliers and the beautiful mouldings recall the elegance of the private salons of the Belle Epoque revisited with a modern touch. The jade pebble floor and calade walls – round, sand-coloured stones – imbue the place with a refined cachet.
