Hiking in the Land of Lakes - The Grand Tour

In the Néouvielle

From hut to hut, with a light rucksack, you’ll make your way through one of the most beautiful jewels in the Pyrenees: the Néouvielle massif, classified as a National Nature Reserve, and a veritable kingdom of water. There are countless high-altitude lakes here, alongside a multitude of laquets, torrents and peat bogs. The loop-shaped route winds its way between granite boulders, high meadows, fragrant rhododendron groves and high, multi-century-old hooked pines, offering a magnificent series of azure mirrors. A fabulous walk in the turquoise-blue Land of Lakes, to be enjoyed on your own, as a couple, with friends or as a family!

Day 1

Arrival at Lac d’Orédon – Les Laquettes

8 km / + 350 m / – 350 m (Return via the same route)

A short walk to warm up. Through the fragrant pine forest, the route rises above Lac d’Orédon to the small plateau hosting Les Laquettes, an idyllic garden with calm, crystal-clear stretches of water surrounded by pine trees and aquatic plants. Further up, the path leads to Lac d’Aubert, nestling in a high mountain setting at the foot of the imposing Pic du Néouvielle.

Return to the Chalet hotel on foot along the same route or by shuttle bus (optional day trip).

Day 2

Lacs d’Aumar et Aubert – Hourquette d’Aubert – Hourquette de Mounicot – Lac de la Mourèle – Lac de Mounicot – Lac d’Astazou – Lac de la Glère – Refuge de la Glère

Start: Lac d’Aumar (take the shuttle up) > Finish: Refuge de la Glère
5.7 km / + 635 m / – 697 m

After leaving the bucolic Lac d’Aumar and Lac d’Aubert, symbols of the Néouvielle reserve, the route enters a more mountainous world, crossing two passes offering spectacularviews over the massif dotted with lakes.

The descent to the Glère refuge, in a wildly beautiful mineral valley, is full of surprises, with deep-blue lakes appearing unexpectedly along the way.

Day 3

Lac de la Glère – Hourquette de Mounicot – Lac de Tracens – Col de Madamète – Lacs de Madamète – Refuge d’Aygues-Cluses

Start: Refuge de la Glère > Finish: Refuge d’Aygues-Cluses
12 km / + 886 m / – 856 m

After a foray into the heart of the granite maze of the Glère valley, revealing new emerald lakes, the route crosses the hourquette de Mounicot and continues into the grandioselakeside world of the Coubous valley. The final climb of the day takes you over the Col de Madamète to the neighbouring Aygues-Cluses valley and its refuge. On the way, take a refreshing break on the inviting lawns of the Madamète lakes!

Day 4

Lac d’Agalops – Hourquette de Nère – Lac de Gourg Nère – Laquets de Port Bielh – Lac de Port Bielh – Hourquette de Caderolles – Lac de Campana – Refuge de Campana de Cloutou

Start: Refuge d’Aygues Cluses > Finish: Refuge de Campana de Cloutou
6 km / + 595 m / – 527 m

This stage takes place in one of the most beautiful and wildest areas of the Néouvielle, far from road access. The route takes in a spectacular world of granite and lakes, offering vast vistas as you cross two passes at almost 2500m. The waltz of lakes continues until you reach the welcoming refuge overlooking Lake Campana. The reward at the end of the road.

Day 5

Lac de la Hourquette – Col de Bastanet – Lacs de Bastan (upper lake, middle lake, lower lake) – Lac de l’Oule – Refuge de l’Oule

Start: Refuge de Campana de Cloutou > Finish: Refuge de l’Oule
8.4 km / + 416 m / – 821 m

There’s so much to see on this north-south crossing! A myriad of lakes, groves of twisted pines, vast high-altitude meadows and halfway up the mineral ascent to the Col du Bastanet, at 2509 m, from where you can see the whole of today’s route.

Day 6

Col d’Estoudou – Soum de Monpelat – Lac d’Orédon

Start: Refuge de l’Oule > Finish: Lac d’Orédon
6 km / + 550 m / – 508 m

Mediterranean ambience under the light shade of pine trees on this final stage, starting in the peaceful, luminous surroundings of Lac de l’Oule.

From the Col d’Estoudou, the ascent of the modest Soum de Monpelat is a must, for a remarkable panorama of the great Néouvielle peaks and more than a dozen lakes.
