The jewels of the Pyrenees

Lourdes, under the sign of the exceptional

In the Pyrenees
  • 180

Discover Lourdes, a little-known town with a fascinating architectural heritage and a strategic location at the crossroads of the jewels of the Pyrenees: Gavarnie, the Pic du Midi, the Tourmalet, Cauterets-Pont d’Espagne… Situated on the banks of the river, the Sanctuary can be visited in complete freedom and simplicity. No itinerary or timing is imposed. We suggest visiting the basilicas – with a special mention for the underground basilica – before crossing the arcades to discover the fountains, the Grotto and the chapels of light.

Then, in the evening, you’ll be treated to a completely different spectacle. The torchlit procession draws a serpentine of light undulating across the Parvis along the river. A truly exceptional spectacle!

2 days / 2 nights

As your stay progresses, put together your days according to your desires and the weather.
Here, we suggest this programme, but you can shape it with the help of your holiday advisor, who will be able to help you and book your activities for the best possible experience.

Day of arrival

Lourdes at dusk

Your journey begins in Lourdes, where the peaceful atmosphere of the Sanctuary welcomes you as soon as night falls.

Few places of worship remain open at night, but here the Sanctuary grounds are accessible every day from 6am to midnight. At 11pm, a mass is celebrated at the Grotto, offering a unique moment of meditation. It’s the perfect time to get to know Lourdes, when the magic of the place is even more apparent at night.

Day 1

At the crossroads of the jewels of the Pyrenees

The day begins at the Pic du Midi, a veritable belvedere perched at an altitude of 2877m, offering the finest views of the Pyrenees suspended between sky and mountains. We recommend that you get there by lunchtime.

The afternoon continues with a crossing of the legendary Col du Tourmalet, playground of the Tour de France cyclists, before discovering the colossus that is the Cirque de Gavarnie. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this natural masterpiece impresses with its high rock walls and its waterfall, the highest in Europe.

Return to Lourdes at the end of the day, your head still full of grandiose images.

Day 2

Visit to Lourdes

In the morning, you’re free to visit the Sanctuary of Lourdes. Follow your inspiration and let yourself be guided by your desires: the basilicas with their fascinating architecture, the Grotto where you can touch the rock and light a candle, or the fountains where you can drink Lourdes water.

On Sundays and Wednesdays (April to October), an international mass is celebrated at 9.30am in the underground Basilica of St Pius X.

To round off your stay in style, head for a charming hilltop village offering enchanting views over the valley. A short stroll will take you to the Notre-Dame-de-Piétat chapel, nestling under century-old lime trees, before you sit down to a gourmet dinner at the local institution.
