Lake Payolle-Campan

Little Canada in the Pyrenees

At Payolle, the mountain becomes lake, forest and light. At an altitude of 1,139 metres, a large mirror of water stretches out at the foot of the fir trees, between open mountain pastures and peaks in the background. People come here to breathe easier, slow down, walk, play, slide or simply watch. In summer, the site is cool and calm; in winter, it is bathed in a luminous white where the mountains take on a Nordic flavour. A simple, beautiful and deeply rejuvenating escape.

activities

A world of activities

for young and old

The lake, forests and mountain pastures make up a complete playground. On the water, the water sports centre offers kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddling, pedal-boating, hydrospeed and an electric barge accessible to people with reduced mobility.
Around the site, families will also find plenty to keep them moving and having fun: pony rides, playgrounds, tree climbing for the youngest and pumptrack for cycling enthusiasts.

Under the trees, mountain bike trails keep the momentum going. In the mountain pastures, the herds are a reminder that Payolle remains a living space, to be discovered with care and respect. The small pastoral heritage also extends the discovery, discreetly present in the landscape.

walks

Walks and viewpoints

according to the mood of the day

From the lake, the walk can be gentle or a little more strenuous. The loop around the lake offers a good first approach, but there are other paths to broaden your horizons. The Plo del Naou (1754m ) offers a remarkable view of the valley and surrounding hills. Further on, the area around Campan invites you to extend your discovery to other classics of the sector, such as the Casque du Lhéris (1595 m), which is accessible and panoramic.

In Payolle, hiking can be done according to the mood of the day: a peaceful stroll along the water’s edge, a family walk in the mountain pastures, or a more extended outing to the heights.

winter

When the snow sets in

When the snow sets in, Payolle changes season without changing its soul. Around the lake and in the forest, the landscape takes on a more Nordic feel, more hushed, quieter. Nicknamed ” Little Canada”, the site boasts over 35 kilometres of signposted snowshoe trails, free and accessible to all, from the curious walker to the more experienced hiker.

The area around the lake lends itself to many different ways of experiencing winter: on foot, on snowshoes, on cross-country skis, by dog sled or simply on a toboggan for the most spontaneous of pleasures.

There’s something very accessible and very exotic about winter here: an open, luminous mountain, where you come as much to move around as to enjoy the simple beauty of a snow-covered landscape.
