Clinging to the cliff, with the rock as its roof and suspended above the valley, the architecture of this monastery, built in 902, is unique in the Pyrenees.
At the edge of a forest, you can begin to make out the monastery beneath its enormous rock.
Its almost intact cloister and Mozarabic gateway bear witness to the harmony between man and nature that reigns here.
Originally a royal pantheon for the Crown of Aragon and its nobles, it is now a key stop-off point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
