San Juan de la Peña

On the road to Compostela

Nestling in the heart of the Aragonese Pyrenees, the impressive Abbey of San Juan de la Peña is a unique historical and architectural site built in the 10th century. Founded in the Middle Ages beneath an imposing rock face, this abbey lost in the mountains offers a spectacular setting. It is renowned for its Romanesque and Gothic heritage, surrounded by wild landscapes and places for hiking and walking. The “old” and “new” monasteries are located on the route to Santiago de Compostela and are a must for pilgrims.

THE MONASTERY OF SAN JUAN DE LA PEÑA

Fusion with rock

Clinging to the cliff, with the rock as its roof and suspended above the valley, the architecture of this monastery, built in 902, is unique in the Pyrenees.

At the edge of a forest, you can begin to make out the monastery beneath its enormous rock.

Its almost intact cloister and Mozarabic gateway bear witness to the harmony between man and nature that reigns here.
