Beneath your feet, a world tens of thousands of years old is revealed, where you’ll discover unique underground routes designed for a complete and educational visit. The caves of Labastide, Médous, Bétharram, Gargas and the Gouffre d’Esparros immerse you in the history of the region and its civilisation. Here are our top 5 caves not to be missed.

N°1

The Labastide caves

and the Prehistory area

Join an enthusiastic guide as he takes you back in time to follow in the footsteps of our Stone Age ancestors. Along the way, look out for the footprints of prehistoric animals, such as the cave bear, a 3-metre-high herbivore. In front of the Grotte Blanche, observe the birth of primitive fire in a Magdalenian tent. The walls are damp and sometimes shed a tear. Wrapped up in blankets, everyone murmurs so as not to awaken memories of the place, because prehistoric man still seems to haunt these caves.

In this finely sculpted theatre, animated images, sound and light take you right back to prehistoric times. Cave art fills the space. The visit continues from workshop to workshop to relive the ancestral gestures that have shaped our humanity. You can paint with your fingers and see who is the best mammoth artist in the family. Then it’s on to the fun trail, where children can try their hand at becoming a real little prehistoric hunter.

N°2

The caves of Gargas

and the Nestplori@ centre

In front of the natural entrance to the gallery, a specialist in the caves of Gargas distils his revelations and takes you back to a memory that has been in your genes since the Stone Age. You plunge into the cave, into the heart of prehistory. The lighting adds to the mystique. An ibex appears on the walls. Further down, a bison continues its journey.

The visit ends at the sanctuary of hands, where there are 231 negative hand stencils. Most of them are incomplete, with amputated phalanges. What are the reasons for this? Could it be language, a signature or shamanic rituals? The mystery remains. Look all around you, time has etched its passage: stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, waves of rock, traces of a vanished ocean. Neanderthal man camped here.

Complete your guided tour at the Nestplori@ centre. This innovative space uses interactive digital tools to enhance your exploration of the caves. 3D animations and immersive experiences plunge you into the world of prehistoric scientists and artists.

N°3

The Esparros chasm

Enter this dark tunnel, where the light punctuates your visit. The clatter of water invades the space, the rain soaks into the earth. Climb some fifty steps to discover the upper part. Here, nature reveals its wonders and surrounds you with an enchanting serenity.

In the lower part, the floor sparkles with bouquets of aragonite, the stalactites embrace the stalagmites to form columns, and the gypsum glitters like a river of diamonds. The corridor widens to overlook a vast, silent body of water. The lake room invites contemplation. Music played on stalactites rises and the cavity comes alive. You emerge from the Gouffre d’Esparros stunned, Zen-like, with the feeling of having touched a piece of eternity.

N°4

The Médous caves

Before you even enter the caves, you pass through a verdant park, a veritable haven of peace. Majestic trees shade streams fed by a semi-circular basin, where the water gushes out of two neighbouring cavities. The entrance to the Médous caves, nestled in this enchanting setting, is the gateway to an unforgettable underground adventure.

The Médous caves, ranked among the most beautiful in the world, are divided into two sections: the “Galerie Sèche” and the “Galerie des Merveilles”. Along the way, marvel at the spectacular formations: stalactites, stalagmites, columns, eccentrics, gours and petrified waterfalls.

In the Galerie des Merveilles, let yourself be carried away by a boat gliding silently along the underground river. The visit also reveals a spiritual aspect: in the past, the Médous caves were a place of pilgrimage after the Virgin Mary appeared to a little shepherdess, Liloye. The site’s miraculous reputation has made it one of the three most important shrines devoted to the cult of Mary in the Tarbes-Lourdes diocese.

N°5

The caves of Bétharram

The Grottes de Bétharram invite you on an enchanting journey to the heart of the earth, where nature has sculpted wonders over the millennia. Nestling among the hills of the Pyrenees, just a few kilometres from Lourdes, these caves fascinate with their spectacular geological formations and rich history.

The adventure begins with a walk through the galleries, where stalactites and stalagmites reveal themselves in a symphony of shapes and colours. The draperies of calcite, frozen in time, add a touch of magic to this natural setting. You continue your exploration with a boat trip on the underground river, where the silence is interrupted only by the gentle lapping of the water. The reflections create a play of light that brings the caverns to life and reveals the hidden beauty of the mineral formations.

The Grottes de Bétharram are open to all, with specially adapted facilities and multilingual guides, and are a testament to the power of time.
