Mountaineering and ice climbing

The most famous spot in the Pyrenees

Since the 1980s, Gavarnie has been famous for its ice waterfalls. People come from all over the world to climb these ephemeral sculptures. Completely frozen in winter, the Grande Cascade, over 400 metres high, attracts climbers who like to venture up these crystalline, temporary walls.

The underlying theme is the quest for aesthetics and beautiful lines. The Cirque in winter is a treasure trove for ice lovers. There are more than fifty routes on the three tiers, spread over a multitude of nets of frozen water and waterfalls.

Watching these artists evolve on the ice leaves no one indifferent. In Gavarnie, mountain guides are on hand to help you discover this unique and demanding activity. And you need to be in very good physical condition, as staying on the ice for several hours requires energy and resources.
