Great walks and mythical trails

In the Hautes-Pyrénées

Many famous trails cross the Hautes-Pyrénées department. These are long-distance routes lasting several days or weeks, spectacular adventures requiring a good deal of organisation and perseverance. The GR10, which crosses the region from east to west, offers grandiose landscapes and major challenges for seasoned hikers. The GRP routes, such as GRP 10, also allow you to discover more secret and unspoilt corners of the region. The challenge is even greater in a department with steep slopes and varied terrain.

The GR10

The great crossing of the Pyrenees

This huge hiking trail wanders from peak to valley, crossing the Pyrenees from the ocean to the Mediterranean on the north side.

More than just a route, it’s a promise: to encounter the Pyrenees in all their rich diversity. Thanks to its many access points, the GR10 allows everyone to choose their own itinerary.

The HRP

Haute Randonnée via the crests

There are many itineraries in the Pyrenees, but there is one that attracts all the envy, a long thread that every passionate mountaineer fantasises about following once in their life: the HRP.

A mythical route, a fantastic epic, a crossing of the summits, on wild ridges, without bothering about borders, sometimes on the French side, sometimes on the Spanish peaks, but always with your heart beating a little faster.

The Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela

The pilgrims' walk

Two of the main Jacobean routes, the Camino d’Arles and the Camino del Pyreneo, pass through the Hautes-Pyrénées. With their varied and unforgettable landscapes, these trails also cross some extraordinary sites.

The Arles route

Also known as the Via Tolosana, it runs from Toulouse and Auch to Pau via Maubourguet, on the Grande Randonnée trail (GR 653), with a possible link from Maubourguet to Lourdes (GR 101).

The GR 78

This itinerary follows the Pyrenees mountain range. From the Cathedral of Saint-Bertrand de Comminges, where pilgrims are traditionally welcomed, it leads to Lortet and then on to Lourdes and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.

The GR 105

Another route, further south from Lortet, runs through the Vallée d’Aure. Modelled on ancient Roman roads, it passes by the Rioumajou hospice and links up with the GR653 at Jaca.
