Day 1

Arrival in the Louron Valley

After passing through Luchon, you arrive at the Col de Peyresourde, a cycling classic with over sixty credited passes since 1910. Take the time to stop for a while at the summit before heading back to your hostel. From its position as a balcony overlooking the valley, the view is just as breathtaking: the lake, the small villages, the summits…

On your way:

  • The Col de Peyresourde, a wide pass with breathtaking views.
  • The village of Mont and its Romanesque chapel, listed as a Historic Monument, and its exterior fresco, which has stood the test of time.
  • Lac de Génos-Loudenvielle, the focal point as you descend the Col de Peyresourde, offering a lovely walking route and a host of fun activities.

Day 2

From the Louron Valley to Saint-Lary

29 km / 44 min

Your Pyrenean Road Trip begins in the Louron Valley. The scenery is magnificent and there’s plenty to choose from: a 600-metre descent on an all-terrain scooter, a quad bike ride accompanied by Patrick to discover the mountains in a different way. If you prefer, you can try paddle boarding on the lake at Génos-Loudenvielle in a fabulous setting, or an electric bike ride on the trails….

To round off the day, relax in the thermal lagoons, in the open air, with your eyes riveted on the peaks and your lungs filled with pure air. At Balnéa, you can switch off and recharge your batteries…

Then it’s time to head for the neighbouring Vallée d’Aure and its emblematic resort of Saint-Lary. We recommend you follow the scenic route over the Val Louron – Azet pass.

Your activities :

  • Downhill scooter, you hurtle down the trails, between grassy slopes and forest paths, on your all-terrain scooter to reach the Génos-Loudenvielle lake.
  • Quad biking: your guide will show you landscapes he knows like the back of his hand and share his passion with you on an unforgettable quad biking tour.

On your way:

  • The Val Louron-Azet pass, at the summit, vast pastures and a favourite take-off point for paragliders.

You’ll find all our good addresses and tips in the Roadbook.

Day 4

Ainsa to Saint-Lary

98 km / 2h05

Back to France. Today you’ll meet at 4pm at the Bazus-Aure bridge to take your raft down the Neste d’Aure: fun guaranteed!

In the meantime, we suggest you take the Route des Lacs de Haute Montagne to discover one of the most beautiful lakeside landscapes in the Massif: the Néouvielle National Nature Reserve, with its countless lakes.

You can have lunch on the banks of Lac d’Orédon in the chalet refuge set up on the banks.

On your way:

  • The Cap-de-Long dam, a monumental dam over 100 m high, it forms one of the largest water reservoirs in the Pyrenees.

Your activity:

  • Rafting on the Neste, learning to navigate the rushing waters of the Neste d’Aure like a pro. Laughter, excitement and great memories guaranteed.

Well worth the diversions :

  • The Pineta Valley: a short diversions on the road that offers you a pleasant stopover in a grandiose setting near the giant Mont-Perdu, which rises to an altitude of 3,555 m.

Day 5

Saint-Lary to Viella

82 km / 1h50

The adventure continues! It begins with a climb over a pass: the Col d’Aspin or the Hourquette d’Ancizan, your choice. Both lead to the beautiful Lac de Payolle, nestling in a forest of fir trees. It’s known here as the “Little Canada of the Pyrenees”. Don’t delay, you’ve got an appointment at 10am (Vie d’estive) for an original meeting with the shepherds Yan and Cédric, and their flocks. Or maybe you’d prefer to take part in a highly original suspended course and via ferrata in the Adour gorges.

Afterwards, you’ll set off to climb the Pic du Midi. A spectacular cable car ride takes you to the summit. Take time to visit the site, stroll the terraces and admire the view of the Pyrenees. Exceptional!

At the end of the day, you’ll cross the Col du Tourmalet, so dreaded by the Tour de France riders, to reach your bed and breakfast in a charming village near Luz-Saint-Sauveur.

On your way :

  • Arreau, a typical, pleasant village where you can stop off at a café or discover its distinctive architecture.
  • The wild and little-travelled Col d’Aspin, offering sweeping views of the Pic du Midi
  • Pic du Midi, the Arbizon and the Aure valley.
  • Lac de Payolle, nestling in a forest of fir trees, is a great place to get away from it all.
  • The legendary Col du Tourmalet, the highest road pass in the Pyrenees at 2,115 m.

Your choice of activities:

  • Meet the shepherds, set off to meet Yann and Cédric and their herds in the middle of the summer pastures.
  • Via Ferrata, above the tumultuous waters of the Adour, climb, jump, cross monkey bridges and have fun with the whole family.

Day 6

Viella > Gavarnie

59 km / 1h16

Today’s route takes you to the sacred mountain of Gavarnie, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’re about to discover some intense and spectacular scenery.

More than just geological curiosities, the semi-circular walls of the great cirques create grandiose landscapes. If you have time, make a diversion to the Cirque de Troumouse, the Goliath of the cirques!

Odile and Philippe await you for a tasty meal and a lovely night in their hotel overlooking the Brèche de Roland.

On your way :

  • The Napoleon Bridge – Luz-Saint-Sauveur: A spectacular structure consisting of a single arch 47m in diameter and rising to a height of 66m, built in 1860 on the orders of Napoleon III, who was taking a spa treatment at Luz-Saint-Sauveur with Empress Eugénie.
  • The Gavarnie cemetery, the pantheon of the great Pyrenean artists buried here, opposite the circus.
  • The Cirque de Troumouse, the Goliath of circuses, even bigger than Gavarnie.
  • The Cirque d’Estaubé, accessible only by foot (1 hour’s walk), a world of stone and lichen, another planet with something lunar about it.

Well worth the diversions:

  • The interpretation trail between the Col des Tentes and the port of Boucharo on the Spanish border: an easy 1.5km walk on a virtually flat panoramic trail offering spectacular views of the peaks and 3000s that surround the Cirque de Gavarnie.
  • The panorama from the Pic des Tentes: great views of the surrounding peaks, the Marboré, the Taillon, part of the Brèche de Roland, the Vignemale massif and even the Pic du Midi.
  • La Brèche de Roland: 2 hours’ walk to reach the refuge and a further 1 hour to reach the Brèche. The view is spectacular.
  • Notre-Dame des Neiges (Our Lady of the Snows ): a short 20-minute walk to take in the beautiful views of the village of Gavarnie and its cirque.

Day 7

Gavarnie to Argelès-Gazost

60 km / 1h40

You’ll love discovering Cauterets-Pont d’Espagne, an emblematic site in the Pyrenees National Park, a veritable Garden of Eden. The Puntas gondola lift and the Gaube chairlift make for an effortless visit. You can have lunch next to the Pont d’Espagne waterfalls or on the banks of the splendid Lac de Gaube, at the foot of the Vignemale, the highest peak in the French Pyrenees. To round off the day in style, spend some quality time with the marmots and the 600 residents of the Parc Animalier des Pyrénées.

On your way :

  • Cauterets, with its Belle Époque monuments.
  • The Parc Animalier des Pyrénées, where you can discover bears, wolves, lynxes, marmots, vultures and other animals.

Well worth the diversions:
