Day 1

From Loudenvielle to Saint-Lary

21 km / 33 min

After crossing Luchon, you arrive at the Col de Peyresourde. Take time to stop for a while at the summit. Then plunge into the Louron valley, with Lake Génos-Loudenvielle in your sights. The Pyrenees welcome you with a soak in the naturally warm and comforting spring water, in the open air, your eyes riveted on this magnificent mountain range. After this comforting break, you’ll hit the road again for a final pass, the Val Louron-Azet pass, which will take you to the Saint-Lary valley, a great Pyrenean valley and luxurious base camp for the night.

On your way :

  • The Col de Peyresourde, a wide pass with breathtaking views.
  • The village of Mont and its Romanesque chapel, listed as a Historic Monument, and its exterior fresco, which has valiantly withstood the ravages of time.
  • Lac de Génos-Loudenvielle, the focal point as you make your way down the Col de Peyresourde, offering a lovely walking route.
  • The Col de Val Louron-Azet, at the summit, is a vast pastureland and a favourite take-off point for paragliders.

You’ll find all our useful addresses and tips in the Roadbook.

Day 2

From Saint-Lary to Gavarnie

93 km / 2h07

The adventure continues and today there are more surprises in store. More aerial. Take the Col d’Aspin to reach the Pic du Midi. After a spectacular cable car ride to the summit of the Pic du Midi, where you’ll enjoy the best views in the Pyrenees, you’ll cross the Col du Tourmalet, so dreaded by the Tour de France riders, before spending the night in Gavarnie. Don’t be impatient, you’ll have all day tomorrow to discover this extraordinary World Heritage site.

On your way:

  • The Col d’Aspin, wild and little frequented, it offers an extensive panorama of the Pic du Midi, the Arbizon and the Aure valley.
  • Lac de Payolle, nestling in a forest of fir trees, is a great place to get away from it all.
  • The legendary Col du Tourmalet, the highest road pass in the Pyrenees at 2,115 m.
  • The Pont Napoléon at Luz-Saint-Sauveur, a spectacular structure consisting of a single arch 47 m in diameter and 66 m high, a must for bungee jumpers.
  • Wellness break at Luzéa, Luz-Saint-Sauveur, a place that bears the memory of Eugénie.

    Well worth a visit:

  • Crêperie La Ferme Saint-Justin in Sers: enjoy a generous crêpe on the terrace, a magnificent balcony overlooking the valley!

Day 3

Gavarnie > Cauterets-Pont d’Espagne

50 km / 1h18

Today is the day of the great circus! In your pocket, your ticket to meet a world and geological celebrity: the Cirque de Gavarnie. A day full of emotion. The sight of these cirques will move you deeply. True masterpieces of nature, they look like pure invention. But the experience of this immense beauty will fill you with a sense of fulfilment. At the end of the day, you’ll head back to Cauterets so that tomorrow morning you’ll have a front-row seat for a leisurely stroll through the Pyrenees’ Garden of Eden: Cauterets-Pont d’Espagne.

On your way :

  • The Gavarnie cemetery, a pantheon of great Pyrenean artists buried here, opposite the cirque.
  • The Cirque de Troumouse, the Goliath of circuses, even bigger than Gavarnie.
  • The Cirque d’Estaubé, accessible only by foot, a world of stone and lichen, another planet with something lunar about it.

Well worth the diversions:

  • The interpretation trail between the Col des Tentes and the port of Boucharo on the Spanish border: an easy 1.5km walk on a virtually flat panoramic trail offering spectacular views of the peaks and 3000m peaks that surround the Cirque de Gavarnie.
  • The panorama from the Pic des Tentes: great views of the surrounding peaks, the Marboré, the Taillon, part of the Brèche de Roland, the Vignemale massif and even the Pic du Midi.
  • La Brèche de Roland: 2 hours’ walk to reach the refuge and a further 1 hour to reach the Brèche. The views are spectacular.
  • Notre-Dame des Neiges (Our Lady of the Snows ): a short 20-minute walk to take in the beautiful views of the village of Gavarnie and its cirque.

Day 4

Cauterets > Lourdes

45 km / 1h15

Today will be gentle, harmonious and full of energy. After frolicking in the Garden of Eden in the Pyrenees, you’ll join the joyous and magical torchlight procession to Lourdes for a unique experience. Early risers can even enjoy a relaxing break in the naturally warm and soothing waters of the Bains du Rocher in Cauterets.

On your way :

  • Cauterets, with its Belle Époque monuments.
  • Take a wellness break at the Bains du Rocher, where you can relax in a refined atmosphere.

Well worth the diversions:

  • Gourmet break at Refuge des Sens, a chocolate shop and tearoom: in Cauterets, the hardest thing to choose between here is Viennese chocolate, tarte tatin, pastries, crêpes…
