The best of the Pyrenees

Itinerary through the emblematic sites of the Pyrenees
  • 100
  • 180

Ignoring borders, this itinerary takes you on a discovery of the most grandiose aspects of the Pyrenees: the summit of the mountain range, canyons and cirques listed as World Heritage Sites, a place of Apparitions, the purest sky-watching site in Europe, healing hot springs… not forgetting a night in a splendid luxury hotel in the monumental Canfranc station. Perched at an altitude of almost 1,200 metres, it was Europe’s largest railway station in the 1930s.

Day 1

Arrival in the Vallée d’Aspe

A gateway valley toSpain, it is one of the least frequented in the Pyrenees.

Arrival at Bedous.

You’ll find our useful addresses and tips in the Roadbook.

Day 2

From Cirque de Lescun to Canfranc station

49 km / 1 h 05

A slight diversions takes you to the Cirque de Lescun. An immense green plateau dotted with farms, surrounded by forests and encircled by limestone cliffs. It’s known here as the ” Dolomites of the Pyrenees “. Then you can discover the Chemin de la Mâture. Spectacular and daring, it was carved into the cliffs in the 18th century. Its vertiginous route has made it famous. Although its construction was perilous, the Chemin de la Mâture is now an attraction accessible to all and well worth a visit. A new footbridge suspended 50 metres above the Gorges de l’Enfer provides access to the Fort du Portalet, where famous figures such as Léon Blum and Marshal Pétain were imprisoned. Then it’s time to cross the Col du Somport to reach the Spanish side of the Pyrenees, where you’ll spend the night in a spectacular hotel at Canfranc, built in what was once Europe’s largest railway station in the 1930s.

On your way:

  • The Cirque de Lescun, the “Dolomites of the Pyrenees” and the village of Lescun perched at an altitude of 900 m.
  • La Mâture, a cliffside path
  • The Fort du Portalet, a veritable architectural feat, cascades over a height of around 100 metres and blends into the cliff face
  • The Col du Somport, a historic crossing between France and Spain, offering spectacular views of the surrounding peaks.

You’ll find all our useful addresses and tips in the Roadbook.

Day 3

Monastery of San Juan de la Peña to Jaca

76 km / 1 h 35

Today we suggest you discover another wonder of the Pyrenees: the Monastery of San Juan de la Peña. A short walk will take you to the Balcony of the Pyrenees, where you can enjoy a general view of the massif you are invited to discover. At the end of the day, you’ll head for Jaca, where you’ll discover the citadel, the cathedral and its lively streets.

You’ll find all our useful addresses and tips in the Roadbook.

Day 4

Grand Canyon of Ordesa-Unesco

104 km / 1 h 48

After having seen it from afar, from the Balcony of the Pyrenees, today you will be entering the bowels of the immense Ordesa Canyon, whose Dantesque walls give it the appearance of a Pyrenean Colorado. Listed as a World Heritage Site, along with the Gavarnie-Mont Perdu massif, the relief of the Ordesa Valley is breathtaking in its beauty and immoderation. Gavarnie and Ordesa, the 2 sides of the same mountain, like Siamese twins, as closely related as they are dissimilar, are the most impressive sites in the whole range.
In the evening, take time out for an excursion to the village ofAínsa, capital of Sobrarbe.

On your way:

  • Lake Ainsa, a magnificent lake with turquoise waters accessible for swimming via numerous dirt tracks.
  • The Plaza Mayor in Ainsa, monumental and entirely paved, surrounded by old houses linked by arcades.

You’ll find all our useful addresses and tips in the Roadbook.

Day 5

From Trou du Toro (Forau de Aigualluts) to Benasque

61 km / 1 h 17

Don’t delay getting on the road, as the day promises to be full of surprises. We start off with some pretty, typical villages, then come face to face with the master of the Pyrenees, theAneto. At an altitude of 3,404 m. The roof of the Pyrenees. A summit as mythical as Mont Blanc and still the stuff of dreams for many mountaineers. Although it has an easy reputation, at least on the face of it, we’re not suggesting you climb it. Instead, you can gaze down on it from a place full of mystery, the Trou du Toro, which literally swallows the waters of the Aneto glacier.

On your way :

  • Défilé de Ventamillo, an impressive, narrow gorge several kilometres long, with surprisingly vertical walls.
  • Benasque, a pretty typical Pyrenean village with stone walls and slate roofs surrounded by the highest mountains in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park.

Well worth a visit:

  • The village of Ancilles: full of charm with its cobbled streets, each house with its inner courtyard and Renaissance-style coat-of-arms gate.

You’ll find our useful addresses and tips in the Roadbook.

Day 6

From the Col du Portillon to the Louron Valley – Balnéa

145 km / 2 h 40

This is one of the longest stages of your Road Trip. But the route will take you through some magnificent scenery. And with five passes on the programme, we can promise you some stunning panoramas. Don’t worry: halfway along the route, we’ll be offering you the chance to stretch your legs in Bossòst, a small village much loved by French people living on the other side of the border, who regularly come here to do a bit of shopping. And at the end of the road: the reward. Two hours of relaxation, up to your neck in the naturally warm and soothing waters of Balnéa, in the open air, with your eyes riveted on the peaks.

On your way:

  • A little corner of Ireland, the route crosses high plateaux and high moors, offering you a hint of Ireland in the heart of the Pyrenees.
  • Bossòst, the last Spanish town before the border, has many shops and restaurants that are popular with the French.
  • The Col du Portillon, a small, winding pass in the heart of a forest of beech and fir trees.
  • The Col de Peyresourde, a wide pass with breathtaking views.
  • Lac de Génos-Loudenvielle, the focal point as you make your way down the Col de Peyresourde, offers a lovely walking route.
  • Arreau, a typical, pleasant village where you can stop off at a café or discover its distinctive architecture.

You’ll find all our useful addresses and tips in the Roadbook.

Day 7

From Col d’Aspin to Gavarnie – UNESCO

73 km / 1 h 44

The adventure continues! It begins with the ascent of a pass: the Col d’Aspin or the Hourquette d’Ancizan, your choice. Both lead to the beautiful Lac de Payolle, nestling in a forest of fir trees. Here it is known as the “Little Canada of the Pyrenees”.
Then you’re off to climb the Pic du Midi. A spectacular cable car ride takes you to the summit. Take time to visit the site, stroll along the terraces, venture onto the vertiginous Ponton dans le Ciel and admire the view over the Pyrenees. Exceptional!

Finally, you’ll cross the Col du Tourmalet into the Pays Toy region, where you can admire the intense and spectacular scenery of the Cirque de Gavarnie, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

On your way:

  • The wild and little-travelled Col d’Aspin, offering sweeping views of the Pic du Midi, the Arbizon and the Aure valley.
  • Lac de Payolle, nestling in a forest of fir trees, is a great place to get away from it all.
  • The legendary Col du Tourmalet, the highest road pass in the Pyrenees at 2,115 m.

Day 8

From Cauterets-Pont d’Espagne – Bains du Rocher to Lourdes

80 km / 1 h 48

You’ll love discovering Cauterets-Pont d’Espagne, an emblematic site in the Pyrenees National Park, a veritable Garden of Eden. The Puntas gondola lift and the Gaube chairlift make for an effortless visit. You can have lunch next to the Pont d’Espagne waterfalls or on the banks of the splendid Lac de Gaube, at the foot of the Vignemale, the highest peak in the Pyrenees.
To round off the day in style, the Bains du Rocher invites you to relax in a refined atmosphere.

You will then end your Pyrenean Road Trip in Lourdes, a unique place in the world. You will be free to visit the Sanctuary, on the banks of the river, an architectural complex unique in France, and watch the rosary by torchlight. In addition to the Sanctuary, you can also enjoy the Lourdes lake, discover the castle perched on its rocky peak or climb the Pic du Jer on the funicular.

On your way :

  • Cauterets, with its Belle Époque monuments.
  • Take a wellness break at the Bains du Rocher, where you can relax in a refined atmosphere.
  • The Parc Animalier des Pyrénées, and discover bears, wolves, lynxes, marmots, vultures and other animals.

Well worth the diversions:

  • A gourmet break at the Refuge des Sens, a chocolate factory and tea room: in Cauterets, the hardest thing to do here is choose between Viennese chocolate, tarte tatin, pastries and crêpes…
