Day 1

Louron Valley > Balnéa

After passing through Luchon, you come to the Col de Peyresourde, a cycling classic with over sixty credited passes since 1910. Take the time to stop for a while at the summit. Then plunge into the Louron valley, with Lake Génos-Loudenvielle in your sights. The Pyrenees welcome you with a bath in naturally warm, comforting spring water, in the open air, your eyes riveted on this magnificent barrier of ports and peaks rising to over 3000 m.

On your way:

  • The Col de Peyresourde, a wide pass with breathtaking views.
  • The village of Mont and its Romanesque chapel, a listed historic monument with an exterior fresco that has stood the test of time.
  • Lac de Génos-Loudenvielle, the focal point as you make your way down the Col de Peyresourde, offering a lovely walking route.

Day 2

Val Louron-Azet pass to Ainsa

92 km / 1h37

Before you reach the valley floor, the morning sun is shining on the high peaks. It’s time to set off. At Génos, you tackle the hairpin bends of the Val Louron-Azet pass. It’s hard to keep your concentration on the road with this splendid view of the 3000 m peaks that form the Spanish border. Our objective: to discover the other side of the mountain, the Spanish Aragon.

Once you’ve passed the Aragnouet-Bielsa tunnel, don’t hesitate to use the many parking areas along the route to take a dip in the natural pools formed by the river. And don’t forget to make a diversion to discover the Canyon d’Añisclo, a concentration of wild nature. You enter it via a narrow, winding road. Without doubt one of the most spectacular routes in the Pyrenees.

In the evening, take the time to visit the village of Ainsa, capital of Sobrarbe. Summer evenings in its fortified square always make for wonderful holiday memories.

On your way :

  • The Val Louron-Azet pass, at the summit, vast meadows of pasture and favourite take-off ground for paragliders.
  • The Aragnouet-Bielsa Tunnel, 3 kilometres of tunnel carved into the belly of the Pyrenees and you’re in Spain.
  • Tella, a former lookout point in the valley from which you can take in one of the finest panoramic views in the Pyrenees.
  • Lake Ainsa, a magnificent lake with turquoise waters.
  • The Plaza Mayor in Ainsa, a monumental, fully paved square surrounded by old houses linked by arcades.

Day 3

From the Route des Lacs de Haute Montagne to Saint-Lary

66 km / 1h07

After your Aragonese escapade on the arid slopes of the Pyrenees, you’ll take the Route des Lacs de Haute Montagne. It winds between stone walls and climbs to Lac de Cap-de-Long (2,161 m), Lac d’Orédon (1,849 m), Lac d’Aumar (2,198 m) and Lac d’Aubert (2,150 m). This is the highest lakes route in the Pyrenees, taking you to one of the most beautiful lakeside landscapes in the massif: the Néouvielle National Nature Reserve , with its countless lakes.

Take the time to explore this magnificent reserve, immerse yourself in this exotic nature, follow the paths that will take you from lake to lake through pine forests and flowery meadows, and enjoy the smell of the pines… Created in 1936, long before the Pyrenees National Park, this nature reserve – one of the oldest in France – has the distinction of being home to the highest concentration of lakes in the Pyrenees. Home to marmots, this protected area is also a haven for a multitude of wildlife species. You might even spot a bearded vulture circling above Néouvielle, the highest peak in the French Pyrenees.

Today’s itinerary ends in Saint-Lary, whose architecture is reminiscent of the villages of Aragon.

On your way:

  • The Cap-de-Long dam, a monumental dam over 100 m high, it forms one of the largest water reservoirs in the Pyrenees.

Well worth a visit:

  • The Pineta Valley: a short diversions on the road that offers a pleasant stopover in a grandiose setting near the giant Mont-Perdu, which rises to an altitude of 3,555 m.

Day 4

From Col d’Aspin to Luz-Saint-Sauveur

72 km / 1h53

The adventure continues! It begins with a climb over a pass: the Col d’Aspin or the Hourquette d’Ancizan, your choice. Both lead to the beautiful Lac de Payolle, nestling in a forest of fir trees. Here it is known as the “Little Canada of the Pyrenees”. Then you’re off to climb the Pic du Midi. A spectacular cable car ride takes you to the summit. Take time to visit the site, stroll along the terraces, venture onto the vertiginous Ponton in the sky and admire the view of the Pyrenees chain. Exceptional!

Finally, you’ll cross the Col du Tourmalet into Toy country to reach the spa town of Luz-Saint-Sauveur, favourite of Empress Eugénie, where you can enjoy a relaxing break in the beneficial waters of the Luzéa spa centre.

Day 5

Gavarnie and the Grands Cirques – Unesco

19 km / 26mn

Today we head for the sacred mountain of Gavarnie-Mont Perdu. You’re about to discover some intense and spectacular scenery: Gavarnie, Troumouse and Estaubé, the great cirques of the Pyrenees listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. More than just geological curiosities, their semi-circular walls create grandiose, extraordinary landscapes. They look like pure invention. If you don’t have time to do all three, go for Gavarnie and Troumouse.

On your way :

  • The Gavarnie cemetery, a pantheon of great Pyrenean artists buried here, opposite the cirque.
  • The Cirque de Troumouse, the Goliath of circuses, even bigger than Gavarnie.
  • The Cirque d’Estaubé, accessible only by foot, a world of stone and lichen, another planet with something lunar about it.

Well worth the diversions:

  • The interpretation trail between the Col des Tentes and the port of Boucharo on the Spanish border: an easy 1.5km walk on a virtually flat panoramic trail offering spectacular views of the peaks and 3000m peaks that surround the Cirque de Gavarnie.
  • The panorama from the Pic des Tentes: great views of the surrounding peaks, the Marboré, the Taillon, part of the Brèche de Roland, the Vignemale massif and even the Pic du Midi.
  • La Brèche de Roland: 2 hours’ walk to reach the refuge and a further 1 hour to reach the Brèche. The view is spectacular.
  • Notre-Dame des Neiges: a short 20-minute walk to enjoy the view.

Day 6

Cauterets-Pont d’Espagne – Pyrenees National Park

42 km / 55mn

You’ll love discovering Cauterets-Pont d’Espagne, an emblematic site in the Pyrenees National Park, a veritable Garden of Eden. The Puntas gondola lift and the Gaube chairlift make for an effortless visit. You can have lunch next to the Pont d’Espagne waterfalls or on the banks of the splendid Lac de Gaube, at the foot of the Vignemale, the highest peak in the French Pyrenees.

To round off the day in style, the Bains du Rocher invites you to relax in a refined atmosphere.

On your way :

  • Cauterets, with its Belle Époque monuments.
  • Take a wellness break at the Bains du Rocher, where you can relax in a refined atmosphere.

Well worth the diversions:

  • A gourmet break at Refuge des Sens, a chocolate shop and tearoom: in Cauterets, the hardest thing to do is choose between Viennese chocolate, tarte tatin, pastries and crêpes…

Day 7

From Saint-Savin to Lourdes

29 km / 31mn

To round off this journey, we offer you a unique and personal experience in a place that is unique in the world. Head for Lourdes and its magnificent torchlight procession, which sets the Marian city ablaze every evening. But we’ve got time. Our first stop will be at the Saint-Martin family restaurant in Saint-Savin, one of the best in the region. The Saint-Martin family have been restaurateurs for 7 generations! That’s what we call a sure thing. Next, we’ll take you on a beautiful itinerary to discover the secret Val d’Azun, a magnificent little unspoilt valley dotted with a dozen small mountain villages with slate roofs and stone walls. Pastoral traditions are still very much alive here, and the farmhouse cheese is famous.

On your way :

  • The Parc Animalier des Pyrénées, and discovering bears, wolves, lynxes, marmots, vultures and other animals.
  • The Pic du Jer funicular, a charming journey guaranteed aboard this century-old funicular that takes you to the summit at an altitude of 1000 m.
  • The fortified castle and its Pyrenean Museum, on its rocky peak overlooking the Marian city and offering an exceptional view of the Sanctuary.

Day of departure

Lourdes

Before leaving the Pyrenees, we suggest you linger a while in Lourdes, a unique place in the world which is once again offering exceptional visiting conditions. You can freely visit the Sanctuary, on the banks of the river, an architectural complex unique in Europe, built in just 100 years.

In addition to the Sanctuary, you can also take advantage of the water sports on Lake Lourdes and discover the castle perched on its rocky outcrop.

On your way :

  • The Grotto: this is where the heart of Lourdes beats, in this Grotto, the scene of the 18 Apparitions. A Madonna has been placed in the hole where the Virgin is said to have appeared.
  • The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, slender and white, perched on the rock of the grotto.
  • The Basilica of the Rosary, in the lower space, is decorated with superb Venetian mosaics by G.D. Facchina, who decorated the Opéra Garnier.
  • The Basilica of St Pius X is underground, built beneath the esplanade. Another original feature is that it is considered to be one of the largest shrines in the world and can accommodate 20,000 pilgrims.
