Day 1

Arrival in Lourdes or Argelès-Gazost

Your Pyrenean Road Trip begins on the welcoming plain of Argelès-Gazost. The site is gentle and sunny, just a few minutes from Lourdes. This is your chance to revisit this site, which is unique in the world. You will be free to visit the Sanctuary, on the banks of the river, an architectural ensemble unique in France, and attend the rosary by torchlight, a superb spectacle on the Parvis du Rosaire, on the banks of the river.

On your way:

  • The Grotto: this is where the heart of Lourdes beats, in the Grotto, scene of the 18 Apparitions. A Madonna has been placed in the hole where the Virgin is said to have appeared.
  • The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, slender and white, perched on the rock of the grotto.
  • The Basilica of the Rosary, in the space below, decorated with superb Venetian mosaics.
  • The underground Basilica of St Pius X, built beneath the esplanade and considered to be one of the largest shrines in the world, with a capacity for 20,000 pilgrims.
  • The Pic du Jer funicular, a charming journey guaranteed aboard this century-old funicular that leads to the summit at an altitude of 1,000 m.
  • The fortified castle and its Pyrenean Museum, on its rocky peak overlooking the Marian city and offering an exceptional view of the Sanctuary.
  • The Pyrenees Animal Park, where you can see bears, wolves, lynxes, marmots, vultures and other animals.

You’ll find all our useful addresses and tips in the Roadbook.

Day 2

Argelès or Lourdes to Biescas

121 km / 2h46

Today we invite you to cross the border, via the Soulor, Aubisque and Pourtalet passes. Along the way, we’ll be offering you an original experience. You’ll climb aboard a small open-air train that travels at an altitude of 2,000 metres through some of the most beautiful scenery, all the way to Lake Artouste. It’s a unique way to discover the magnificent mountain scenery, effortlessly.

On your way :

  • The Val d’Azun, a pretty unspoilt valley dotted with small mountain villages
  • The Col du Soulor, a magnificent viewpoint over the Pyrenees at an altitude of 1,474 m
  • The Col d’Aubisque, a panoramic view of the surrounding peaks and valleys at an altitude of 1,709 m
  • Le petit train d’Artouste, a small open-air train that travels at an altitude of 2,000 metres through some of the most beautiful scenery, all the way to Lake Artouste
  • The Col du Pourtalet, on the Spanish border at an altitude of 1,794 m

Day 3

Grand Canyon of Ordesa-Unesco

68 km / 1h14

Today you will be entering the bowels of the immense Ordesa Canyon, whose Dantesque walls give it the appearance of a Pyrenean Colorado. Listed as a World Heritage Site, along with the Gavarnie-Mont Perdu massif, the relief of the Ordesa Valley is breathtaking in its beauty and immoderation. Gavarnie and Ordesa, the 2 sides of the same mountain, like Siamese twins, as linked as they are dissimilar, are the most impressive sites in the entire range.

On your way :

  • Lake Ainsa, a magnificent lake with turquoise waters
  • The Plaza Mayor in Ainsa, monumental and entirely paved, it is surrounded by old houses linked by arcades.

Day 4

From Ainsa to Lake Orédon

102 km / 2h23

After discovering the famous and grandiose Ordesa Canyon, today we invite you to enter a wilder but equally magnificent canyon: the Añisclo Canyon. You can even take a dip in the natural pools of turquoise water formed by the river. After this Aragonese escapade on the arid slopes of the Pyrenees, you’ll take the Route des Lacs de Haute Montagne to reach one of the most beautiful lake landscapes in the massif: the Néouvielle National Nature Reserve, with its countless lakes. You’ll have plenty of time to explore it tomorrow.
This evening, make the most of this night in the mountains, by the lake, to observe the starry sky. Here, far from the light pollution of the cities, the nights are sparkling.

On your way :

  • Tella, an ancient lookout point in the valley from which you can see in all directions one of the most beautiful panoramas in the Pyrenees.
  • The Aragnouet-Bielsa Tunnel, 3 short kilometres of tunnel dug into the belly of the Pyrenees and you’re back in France.

Well worth the diversions:

  • The Cap-de-Long dam, a monumental dam over 100 m high, it forms one of the largest water reservoirs in the Pyrenees.

Day 5

Lake Orédon to Loudenvielle

39 km / 54 min

Take the time to explore this magnificent reserve, immerse yourself in this exotic natural environment, follow the paths that will take you from lake to lake through pine forests and flower-filled meadows, and enjoy the smell of the pines… Created in 1936, long before the Pyrenees National Park, this nature reserve – one of the oldest in France – has the distinction of being home to the highest concentration of lakes in the Pyrenees. No-one has ever been able to count them! They dot the landscape, forming a string of azure mirrors that glisten amidst meadows, rhododendrons and the tallest hooked pine forests in Europe. Home to marmots, this protected area is also a haven for a multitude of wildlife species. You might even spot a bearded vulture circling above Néouvielle.

In the afternoon, via the Val Louron – Azet pass, you will reach the Louron Valley, an authentic wonderland, where you can take a break to relax and feel good in the warm, soothing waters of Balnéa. Top tip: the outdoor lagoons of the Japanese and Inca baths, from 33°C to 40°C, with panoramic views of the valley’s peaks.

On your way:

  • The Val Louron-Azet pass, at the summit, vast pasture meadows and favourite take-off ground for paragliders.
  • Lac de Génos-Loudenvielle, the focus of attention as you descend the Col de Peyresourde, offering a lovely walking route.

Day 6

From Loudenvielle to Luz-Saint-Sauveur

80 km / 2h04

The adventure continues! It begins with a pass climb: the Col d’Aspin or the Hourquette d’Ancizan, your choice. Both lead to the beautiful Lac de Payolle, nestling in a pine forest. Here it is known as the “Little Canada of the Pyrenees”. Then you’re off to climb the Pic du Midi. A spectacular cable car ride takes you to the summit. Take time to visit the site, stroll along the terraces, venture onto the vertiginous Ponton dans le Ciel and admire the view over the Pyrenees. Exceptional!
Finally, you’ll cross the Col du Tourmalet into Toy country to reach Empress Eugénie’s favourite town, Luz-Saint-Sauveur, where you’ll spend the night.

On your way:

  • The Col d’Aspin, wild and little frequented, it offers an extensive panorama of the Pic du Midi, the Arbizon and the Aure valley.
  • Lac de Payolle, nestling in a forest of fir trees, is a great place to get away from it all.
  • The legendary Col du Tourmalet, the highest road pass in the Pyrenees at 2,115 m.
  • The Pont Napoléon at Luz-Saint-Sauveur, a spectacular structure consisting of a single arch 47 m in diameter and 66 m high, a must for bungee jumpers.

Day 7

Gavarnie & the great cirques

64 km / 1h36

Today you’ll discover some intense and spectacular scenery: Gavarnie, Troumouse and Estaubé, the great cirques of the Pyrenees, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. More than just geological curiosities, their semi-circular walls create grandiose, extraordinary landscapes. They look like pure invention. If you don’t have time to do all three, go for Gavarnie and Troumouse.

On your way :

  • The Gavarnie cemetery, the pantheon of great Pyrenean artists buried here, opposite the cirque.
  • The Cirque de Troumouse, the Goliath of circuses, even bigger than Gavarnie.
  • The Cirque d’Estaubé, accessible only by foot, a world of stone and lichen, another planet with something lunar about it.

Well worth the diversions:

  • The interpretation trail between the Col des Tentes and the port of Boucharo on the Spanish border: an easy 1.5km walk on a virtually flat panoramic trail offering spectacular views of the peaks and 3000m peaks that surround the Cirque de Gavarnie.
  • The panorama from the Pic des Tentes: great views of the surrounding peaks, the Marboré, the Taillon, part of the Brèche de Roland, the Vignemale massif and even the Pic du Midi.
  • La Brèche de Roland: 2 hours’ walk to reach the refuge and a further 1 hour to reach the Brèche. The views are spectacular.
  • Notre-Dame des Neiges (Our Lady of the Snows ): a short 20-minute walk to take in the beautiful views of the village of Gavarnie and its cirque.

Day 8

From Luz-Saint-Sauveur to Cauterets

40 km / 1 hour

You’ll love discovering Cauterets-Pont d’Espagne, an emblematic site in the Pyrenees National Park, a veritable Garden of Eden. The Puntas gondola lift and the Gaube chairlift make for an effortless visit. You can have lunch next to the Pont d’Espagne waterfalls or on the banks of the splendid Lac de Gaube, at the foot of the Vignemale, the highest peak in the Pyrenees. The more adventurous can even go for a swim!
For a gentle end to the day, the Bains du Rocher invites you to relax in a refined atmosphere….

On your way :

  • Cauterets, with its Belle Époque monuments.
Take a wellness break at the Bains du Rocher for a moment of relaxation in a refined atmosphere.

Well worth the diversions:

  • A gourmet break at Refuge des Sens, a chocolate shop and tearoom: in Cauterets, the hardest thing to choose between here is Viennese chocolate, tarte tatin, pastries, crêpes…

Departure day

This is the end of the journey.

If you have time to linger, we suggest a gourmet stopover at the Saint-Martin family restaurant in Saint-Savin, one of the best in the region. The Saint-Martin family have been restaurateurs for 7 generations! That’s what we call a sure thing.
