The Védère biscuit factory

The gourmet palate

A real place to live in the heart of the Hautes-Pyrénées, in the small village of Montgaillard: next to the production workshops, the Védère biscuit factory has taken its place in a railway station hall rebuilt for the occasion, with a shop, tearoom, bakery, restaurant area and shaded terrace ready to take you on a gourmet journey back in time. Eric Oger, former boss of the company, has transformed the site of the legendary Pyrenean factory into a veritable gourmet palace! We’re off to discover this original place full of sweet treats, where the air is deliciously fragrant.

Pyrenean pies and biscuits

A delight of expertise

A legendary pie

If the Védère biscuit factory is famous, it’s first and foremost for its Tourtes and Biscuits Pyrénéens, the result of many years of pastry-making tradition. The story began in 1905, when the Brau family started making biscuits near the beautiful Massey Gardens.

At the same time, while the Védère family was expanding into the bakery business, the family’s grandmother preferred her pies to good bread. Every Sunday, while the house oven was still warm, she would slip her golden delicacy into the oven, much to the delight of the whole family. The tourte delighted the palates and little by little its fame spread beyond the family circle… thus was born the legend of the Tourte Pyrénéenne, of which Védère has the secret!

The company abandoned bread and devoted itself entirely to the production of its pies, cakes and other Pyrenean “fondants”. It was a huge success, and it wasn’t long before Védère bought out the Brau biscuit company, creating the gourmet palate we know today on the banks of the railway line!

What are “Pyrenean biscuits”?

Made with no added fat, just flour, eggs and sugar, this typical Pyrenean cake resembles a sponge cake. A must try!

“The world leaders in Pyrenean cakes!

Eric Oger, the proud owner of the company, liked to underline this pride with a touch of humour. Today, their flagship product is the Pyrenean pie that only they can make. Up to 30,000 of these gourmet cakes are made every month, and more than 10,000 Pyrenean biscuits!

These and other Védère delights can now be found in all themajor supermarkets in the South-West and, of course, in the pretty shop adjoining the production workshops. As well as pastries and biscuits, you’ll find jams, honeys, teas, chocolates and other sweet treats. Full of great ideas, it’s ideal for gourmet gifts that are 100% Hautes-Pyrénées and promote local producers.

Did you know?

  • Do you know what the 3rd speciality of this Pyrenean company is? The crown of kings! Hand-woven by hand, they’re hotly contested by gourmets, and the workshops make 80,000 of them every year!
  • In the production workshops, 2.2 million eggs are broken every year, 50 tonnes of sugar are used, as well as 23 tonnes of butter and 24 tonnes of flour!

A unique tea room

A wagon from that era

Eager to give another dimension to the production workshops and an identity to this gourmet spot hidden away in the heart of Bigorre, Eric came up with a highly original idea: ” I wanted to transform this place, built on the side of a railway line, into a real ‘station’ and make it a unique destination in the Hautes-Pyrénées “. So he salvaged a railway carriage and refurbished it to create an astonishing tea room!

From the shop, you can climb aboard and find yourself in a real train from that era. What’s more, each seat has its own window, and each window offers a splendidview of the Pyrenees!
