Climbing and via ferrata in the Hautes-Pyrénées

Get some height

In the Hautes-Pyrénées, climbing is much more than just a sport – it’s a way of literally soaring to new heights.Climbing propels you up majestic rock faces, where each hold takes you a little closer to the heavens. For those who prefer a little more security, via ferrata offers you a vertical adventure, between cliffs and cables, while keeping your foot on the ground… or almost. These activities, which are both stimulating and accessible, allow you to discover the mountains from another angle, one that is both wild and fascinating. You don’t need to be a professional climber, the most important thing is to let yourself be carried away by the adrenalin and the panorama.

climbing

Outdoor climbing

in equipped natural sites

There are over 30 natural sites in the Hautes-Pyrénées, spread across the valleys from the Val d’Azun to the Barousse. They include route and long route climbing, via ferrata, bouldering and trad climbing. These are real climbing schools where you can learn the right safety techniques, train, have fun and challenge yourself. For added safety, or if you don’t have enough experience to select the right site and routes for you, don’t hesitate to call in a mountain guide.

On bad weather days, the L’Usine climbing gym in Tarbes offers routes up to 19 m high.

summits

The high peaks

to surpass yourself

Some of the highest peaks in the Pyrenees require the use of a rope. More than hiking or climbing, this is mountaineering.

The highest peak in the French Pyrenees, the Grand Vignemale (3298 m), requires you to put on crampons and cross the Ossoue glacier to reach its summit.

Other summits are less high but more difficult, such as the wild Pic Long (3192 m) and its tapering ridges, or the vertiginous three-thousand-metre peaks of the Cirque de Troumouse. For any project beyond your level of experience, or for greater safety, don’t hesitate to call on the services of a mountain guide.

via ferratas

The via ferratas

Hautes Pyrénées

Beneath the magnificent Napoléon bridge above Luz-Saint-Sauveur, a via ferrata course invites you into the depths of the gorge for a thrilling experience.

Further upstream, in the chaos ofCoumély, a course of greater difficulty awaits you. Les Alias de Cauterets offers three different itineraries, while at Vertige de l’Adour, in the Campan valley, supervised vias ferratas allow you to climb walls close to the Garet waterfall.

Finally, a new facility was opened in 2022 on the cliffs of Then, south of Aucun, in the Val d’Azun.
