Bike parks

in the hautes-pyrénées

Whether you’re a keen mountain biker or an amateur looking for a thrill, head to the Hautes-Pyrénées for some unforgettable descents. No bike? No problem, hire is easy and accessible! Our bike parks in Saint-Lary, Cauterets, Barèges and Piau offer a variety of trails suitable for DH, cross-country, enduro and even electric-assist mountain biking, with magical panoramas along the way. Two of them have even hosted stages of the Mountain Bike World Cup! Thanks to the ski lifts, there’s no need to push yourself to reach the summits: all you have to do is enjoy the view… and the descent.

In a bike park, the trails are classified by level of difficulty, using a colour code identical to that used in skiing: green, blue, red or black. Once you’re at the start, all you have to do is choose the track that suits your level of ability. Head for the bike parks in the Hautes-Pyrénées: Saint-Lary, Cauterets, Center Piau and Barèges.

Saint-Lary

The Saint-Lary bike park

A unique concept

Saint-Lary regularly features among the best bike parks in France. It’s a well-deserved reputation, thanks to the meticulous work of the team of bike patrols who maintain a dozen downhill and enduro trails in the Pla d’Adet area, between 1700 m and 2215 m altitude.

One of the top 10 bike parks in France

The site offers four levels of difficulty, so you can progress in complete safety. Beginners can take to the green Family Rider trail, which runs from the summit to the return of the chairlift. Once you’ve got the hang of it, two blue runs take you further, before you try the red All In, ideal for those who have gained in confidence and technique.

For the more experienced, five red runs and two black runs offer a varied playground, including Shorewood, the only one of its kind in the French Pyrenees with its wooden footbridges. From flow trails with banked turns and aerial modules, to more technical enduro trails on the ridges, there’s something for every rider.

The youngest riders haven’t been forgotten either, with instructors from the Ridin’Family club-school on hand to help them get started in a dedicated area. On the programme: balance workshops, handling, introduction to riding and obstacle clearance, so you can discover mountain biking in complete safety.

Cauterets

The Cauterets bike park

Sensations with a view

From the village, the Lys cable car provides an easy link to the arrival station. From here, the first two runs – one blue and one red – are open to riders, or they can continue their ascent by taking the Grand Barbat chairlift up to the crests of the Lys.

After an exceptional panoramic view of the Balaïtous, Vignemale and Pic du Midi peaks, a 1,500 m descent awaits riders. Two runs (blue and red) take you back to the village for a great session lasting around 45 minutes, depending on your pace.

You can take a gourmet break at the intermediate station, at the Lys restaurant, which serves fine cuisine based on local produce. Just opposite, the beginners’ kid zone is equipped with wooden modules, ideal for discovering the first sensations of downhill skiing in complete safety.

At the bottom of the bike park slopes, at the Cambasque car park – where the Tour de France completed a stage in 2023 – a route approved by the French Cycling Federation leads back to the village. It’s a great way to finish the ride, through undergrowth and with balcony views over Cauterets.

Barèges

The Barèges bike park

A paradise for mountain bikers

As summer approaches, while cyclists climb the slopes of the legendary Col du Tourmalet, other cycling enthusiasts leave the asphalt for the trails. In the Grand Tourmalet resort, the Barèges bike park offers an ideal playground with 14 trails through the Tournaboup and Ayré forests.

From the arrival point of the Tournaboup chairlift, there are six downhill runs (1 green, 2 blue, 1 red and 2 black) and five enduro runs (3 green, 1 blue and 1 red). The DH routes take you straight to the bottom of the ski lifts, while the enduro routes plunge through the woods to the Lienz plateau, before reaching the spa village of Barèges, served by a dedicated shuttle bus.

Two signposted routes for electrically-assisted mountain bikes complete the offer, for a gentler experience where the climb is effortless.

Less technical but more accessible than its neighbours, the Barèges site also appeals to gourmets. Near the start of the pistes, the La Laquette restaurant offers burgers, salads and grilled meats, accompanied by tasty desserts. Further down, following the enduro trails, theauberge Chez Louisette delights lovers of traditional cuisine with its home-cooked dishes, including the famous blueberry tart. Both of these establishments have been awarded the HaPy Saveurs label, a brand that promotes local produce through short distribution channels.

Center Piau

The Center Piau bike park

dedicated to novices

With 11 enduro trails and two practice areas, the Piau Bike Center offers a total of 32km of downhill riding. Contrary to what you might think, there are no red or black runs in the 1,850 m to 2,190 m sector of the resort, so this high-mountain area is reserved for novices.

Two green runs and four blue runs are accessed by the Campbieilh chairlift, offering an exceptional panoramic view of the 3,000 mountain peaks at the gateway to the heart of the Pyrenees National Park.

For beginners, there is a carpet at the bottom of the ski area where you can learn to ski in complete safety. The blue route, known as the “Piste de liaison”, links the Piau and Fabian areas over a distance of 5.5km.

In the Coueou forest, more experienced mountain bikers can enjoy the red and black trails. Those wishing to extend their experience in this area can take two green trails and a blue trail. Finally, a 12km cross-border trail leads to the border summit of Port Vieux, at an altitude of 2,379m, offering spectacular views.
